i am so ready for The Holidays to begin so i can allow myself some mental peace and quiet (ps and qs)!!!
onto today’s recommendations…
hello sweet owen,
i couldn’t think of anything so i sought something out and i’m really hoping that what i chose hits for you. are you aware of the 2015 movie jupiter ascending? it stars mila kunis, channing tatum, and eddie redmayne. i love MK specifically because of Bad Moms and A Bad Moms Christmas, both of which i saw in theatres. anyhow, back to business — let’s talk jupiter ascending!
in essence, the movie is about jupiter (mila kunis’s character) being born into nothing, finding out that according to some aliens she’s entitled to the earth, and then being in danger because of this. one day, she’s an ordinary maid living with approximately 17 relatives, the next day she’s attacked while attempting to sell her eggs so that she can give most of the profit to her cousin for no apparent reason. who hasn’t been there!
obviously channing tatum saves her from the attack and the rest unfurls from there. i must note that channing tatum is part wolf but looks almost exactly like normal channing tatum? they fall in love which is forbidden because she is royalty on the other planet and he is scum because he is part wolf. see their exchange about this reality below.
there’s a lot of similarly befuddling dialogue and oddly specific action. i don’t want to give it all away though ‘cause i really want you to experience it firsthand. there are quite a few action scenes but i found those moments really useful for figuring out what exactly was going on in the movie. honestly, i had a lot of fun and i can see myself rewatching it!
note: i’m finding out after placing all of my judgments that this movie is from the wachowskis, who wrote and directed the matrix, so i fear that everyone in the world knows about the movie and that i’m missing something huge that makes it good. either way i stand by what i’ve said and i encourage you to watch it!
hi sam!
have you seen empire? it’s very similar to succession in that they’re both situated around a powerful dad trying to figure out who to leave his empire to. or, as someone with a degree might say, king lear vibes. empire is from fox, so as a network show it’s much more soapy than succession, but the quicker pace + twists and turns make it more bingeable in my opinion.
i love ‘fake’ music made for movies and tv shows (ie the bands in scott pilgrim or the entire premise of josie and the pussycat dolls) and the family business in empire is an entertainment company and record label so there’s a lot to enjoy on that end. admittedly i started watching the show pretty recently so i can’t speak to the later seasons, but since picking it up i’ve been addicted.
let me know if you watch!
