it’s time for a game of recommendation roulette! check out what i recommend to siobhan and adina, and send me a recommendation request if you feel so inclined.
oh, sweet siobhan! thank you for this range of demands. i’m going to answer you numerically, so as to avoid confusion.
Hmm, funny females on TV… I’m trying to think of the less obvious. If you’re looking for something to have on in the background, That Girl (‘66-’71) is VERY good for that. It’s silly and sweet, and similar to most shows of its time, it doesn’t beg you to think deeply! If you’re looking for something that does pull you in, or a show that could even merit rewatches, I’d say The Comeback or Black Monday. The latter is definitely male dominated, but Regina Hall and Casey Wilson are so fuckin’ good in it.
This gossip desert of a year has me parched too! Every morning, still half asleep and operating on animal instinct, I reach for my phone and scroll through the @deuxmoi Instagram stories. Like a little mailroom clerk (I’m begging you to envision some kind of pinstriped overalls situation), I forward pressing stories onto relevant parties (a little Joshua Jackson for Victoria, a little Laura Dern for Taylor, you get it). I don’t usually check gossip sites day to day but something feels very warmly communal about this. Alternatively, for regular people goss, I’d recommend Mitra Jouhari and Joel Kim Booster’s podcast Urgent Care.
Ooh, soft songs. I have to say I’ve been returning to Heart’s Dreamboat Annie a lot lately, and though “Magic Man” and “Crazy on You” might be the most popular tracks of the album, the softer tracks are just as satisfying. Adult Mom’s Soft Spots is another great one, and Ben Seretan’s My Life’s Work is a beautiful synth soundscape that is good to listen to while writing.
adina, i’m so glad you asked! i really loathe watching things that run longer any longer than exactly half (1/2) of one (1) hour so i have a few thoughts for you.
when i worked jobs with lunch breaks (as opposed to freelancing or office jobs that pressure you into eating in front of your computer), i remember being very precious with my time off the clock. i wanted to squeeze as much enjoyment out of it as i could! because of this, i’m most inclined to push Three Busy Debras or Joe Pera Talks with You. they’re both from Adult Swim, which means the episodes are mostly around 12 minutes long. this way you can watch two episodes, have a lil scrolling time, and head back to work feeling both entertained and accomplished!
Three Busy Debras is great if your job is boring and you want something kooky to spice up your day. alternatively, if your job is anxiety-inducing, Joe Pera Talks with You is sure to calm you down at least a little.
for shows that are a little closer to half hour, i’d rec Stath Lets Flats or Work In Progress.
