we-ooo! we-ooo! we-ooo! it’s time for another recommendation roulette.
before i get to today’s questions, i’d like to recommend the book Little Boxes to all of you. LB is a thoughtful book of essays that reflects on old television shows like Northern Exposure and Daria, looking at the viewing experiences surrounding the shows just as what actually appeared on screen. if you’ve lost the majority of your attention span in 2020, at 124 pages, it’s an excellent pick to get the gears turning again.
onward…
ohh, winnie, you know you’re speaking my language.
first, i want to tell you that i respect and admire the seriousness with which you are approaching Dawson’s Creek.
now that that’s covered, i think it’s time you introduce yourself to Veronica Mars. the pilot isn’t great, but the combination of teen soap and murder mystery will really pull you in, and if you grew up watching a lot of network TV, the melding of these two genres will feel very, very warm.
your mention of joshua jackson, katie holmes, and michelle williams tells me that you’ll take delight in the roster of actors that, to varying degrees, waft in and out of Veronica Mars: adam scott, amanda seyfried, matt czuchry (a friendly face from Gilmore Girls!), alia shawkat, the list goes on.
VM’s original run (pre Hulu reboot) was 64 episodes, exactly half of Dawson’s Creek’s 128, making it a fitting hors d'oeuvre. the third season ends with a whimper—the show was abruptly cancelled so there’s no plot resolution. it won’t matter to you though, you’ll run straight to Dawson’s Creek’s Spielberg-loving arms.
grace, i have to admit that i’m a little idiot who knows nothing about psychics and i’ve never really been able to pin down what the hell shoegaze is either. in my head, shoegaze is in the eye of the beholder.
that being said, after scraping my mind for physics related data, i remembered this essay on quantum physics from The Believer by Rivka Galchen. if there’s a difference between regular physics and quantum physics that renders the latter repellent to you, i apologize.
“Death Comes (and Comes and Comes) to the Quantum Physicist”
pop wise, i’ve been absolutely vibing with Rina Sawayama’s album SAWAYAMA lately. i’m particularly into “Who’s Going to Save You Now?” which makes me feel like i’m at a stadium show where the energy is just right.
re: baked goods, i challenge you to make some nanaimo bars! this is one of my favorite baked goods, i started making them on my own when i was about 11 because i was sick of waiting to go to Quizno’s to get them, but very few of my friends know about them ‘cause they’re canadian. care to help me spread the good word on nanaimo bars?
